Introduction:

The small intestine is a coiled mass, filling most of the abdominal cavity below the stomach and liver. Partially digested food mixed with gastric juices (chyme) passes into the small intestine from the stomach. Most part of the chemical digestion and nutrient absorption occur in small intestine. To perform these efficiently, the small intestine must have a large surface area exposed to the chyme. This surface area is imparted to it by the great length of the small intestine, and by extensive folding of the mucosa.
