The National Electric Code specifies a maximum current of 10 A in 16 gauge copper
wire (1.29 mm diameter). What is the corresponding current density?
1. a) Find the electrical resistance of a 0.5 cm long, 22-gauge silver wire, if the electrical
conductivity of silver is 6.15 x 107 (0-m)-¹ at 20° C. The diameter of 22-gauge wire is 0.6438
mm at this temperature.
b) If a potential difference of 10.0 µV is established across the wire, find the current and
current density in the wire. Current density is given by J = 1/A, where A is the cross-sectional
area of the wire.
c) Find the magnitude of the electric field in the sample, assuming it is constant.
An 18-gauge copper wire with a diameter of 3-mm carries a constant current of 1.2-A. The charge concentration in the wire is 8.5 x 1028 per cubic meter. Determine the current density in kA/m2.
