Introduction:
Some fungi release toxic chemicals which are harmful for plants, humans and other living organisms. But some chemical toxins which are specific to the particular group like bacteria are useful for human health. Production of antibiotics secreted from fungi has proved to be beneficial for humankind as they attack bacteria which are responsible for causing various diseases in humans.
To determine:
How and where a new antibiotic produced by fungi could be searched.
Introduction:
The discovery of antibacterial drug penicillin was done by Alexander Fleming. Fleming observed that no bacterial growth was found near the Penicillium mold as it prevented bacterial colonies to grow.

- Which of the following statements about fungi is FALSE? O 1) They may cause human disease. O 2) fungi are photosynthetic. O3) fungi are eukaryotes. O 4) Fungi include yeasts and molds. O 5) Some fungi are unicellular.arrow_forwardThe most common antibiotics that produce from the fungi give five examples ( antibiotic + name of fungi )arrow_forwardMycorrhizal fungi live in the soil and interact with the roots of plants. Essentail nutrients (e.g. nitrogenous compounds) are taken from the soil by the fungi and transferred to the plant roots. The fungi extract carbohydrates from the plant roots. What type of interaction is occurring?arrow_forward
- What benefit do Cordyceps fungi gain from interacting with ants and other insects hosts, and what happens to the hosts by interacting with fungus? Please select all correct answers.arrow_forwardBoth bacteria and fungi are major environmental decomposers. Obviously competition exists in any given environment, but fungi usually have an advantage. What characteristics specific to fungi provide this advantage?arrow_forwardHow can fungi be defined? What is the difference between a yeast and a mold?arrow_forward
- What characteristics distinguish fungi from other forms of life? What distinguishes yeast from other fungi? Explains brieflyarrow_forwardFungi tend to reproduce sexually when nutrients are limited or other conditions are unfavorable, but they reproduce asexually in more ideal conditions. Why is this strategy successful? Please add a reference website, and an example if possiblearrow_forwardWhich of the following statements about fungi is false?a) Fungi may cause disease when growing in or on the human body.b) Some fungi produce toxins that can kill humans.c) Fungal spores may cause allergic responses in humans.d) Systemic mycoses are common in otherwise healthy adults.arrow_forward
- Why do fungi mostly occur in moist habitat? a) Their thin hyphae lose water quickly making them vulnerable to dehydration b) Their spores are small and vulnerable to dehydration c) Their sperm require water to swim to eggs d) Conidiophores require moisture for dispersal e) A and C f) C and Darrow_forwardIn what ways are fungi important in ecosystems?arrow_forwardOne unique feature of fungi is the development of an appressorium and a penetration peg. How do the appressorium and penetration peg function during disease development?arrow_forward
