It is a cylindrical structure of about 4 centimeters in length. It is continuous inferiorly with trachea and superiorly with laryngopharynx. Explanation Function of larynx: The general functions of the larynx are as follows: The larynx acts as a passageway for air. It helps in the production of sound for speech. During swallowing, superior opening of the larynx is covered by the epiglottis that helps to prevent the entry of ingested food into the lower respiratory tract. It assists in increasing the abdominal cavity pressure as epiglottis. The larynx closes over larynx opening so that air cannot escape and simultaneously contraction of abdominal muscles takes place to increase the pressure of abdominal cavity. It participates in both cough and a sneeze reflex. Pictorial representation: Fig.1 represents the structure of larynx. Fig.1: The structure of larynx Structure of the larynx: The larynx is supported by the cartilage framework. There are nine pieces of cartilages that support and hold the larynx by the muscles and the ligaments. The nine cartilages include three unpaired cartilages and three paired cartilages (six cartilages). The unpaired cartilages are as follows: Thyroid cartilage Cricoid cartilage Epiglottis cartilage The paired cartilages are as follows: Arytenoid cartilage Corniculate cartilage Cuneiform cartilage Unpaired cartilages: Thyroid cartilage is the laryngeal largest cartilage that is shield-shaped and forms lateral and anterior walls of larynx.
