Introduction:

The amount of energy required by the body to conduct all the absorptive and postabsorptive processes is measured as its metabolic rate. The absorptive processes include the oxidation of glucose, the synthesis of proteins, glycogenesis, and lipogenesis. The postabsorptive processesincludes protein breakdown in muscle cells, gluconeogenesis, the oxidation of fatty acids, and lipolysis. The energy released during a metabolic reaction is the main source of body heat. The metabolic rate is generally expressed in calorie or kilocalorie.
