In Bessel's method for measuring the focal length ƒ of a positive lens, a small object and
a white screen are set at a fixed separation L, where L > 4f. The lens is moved along a
line through the object perpendicular to the screen, and it is found that there are two lens
positions where a sharply focused image is produced on the screen, one magnified and
one demagnified. The separation between these two lens positions is then measured as
distance D.
Prove that the lens focal length is given by
L² - D²
f
4L
In order to determine the focal length f of a convergent lens, an object and a screen are separated by the distance L. Two positions of the lens are sought, both between the object and the screen, so that sharp images are formed on the screen, one enlarged and one reduced. Let D be the distance found between these two positions of the lens. About this situation, answer the following questions, starting with (a).(b) What condition must f satisfy for the method to work?
f < L/4
f > L/4
f < L/2
f > L/2
f > 2L
f < 2L
f > 4L
f < 4L
(a) What is the value of f?
f = (L² - D²)/2D
f = (L² - D²)/2L
f = (L² - D²)/4D
f = (L² - D²)/4L
f = (L² + D²)/4D
f = (L² + D²)/4L
