Introduction:

The placenta is the structural and functional unit between the maternal body and the developing embryo. It is formed by the interdigitating between chorionic villi and uterine tissue that provides nutrients and oxygen to the developing embryo. Other than transporting nutrients, the placenta removes CO2 (Carbon dioxide) and waste from the embryo and also acts as an endocrine gland. The development of normal microbiota in a developing fetus is largely determined by the already developed biota in the mother.
