Chapter 23, Problem 1RQ

Referring to the circuit shown in Figure 23–1, would it be possible to change the components that have been numbered with an 8 to a number 9, and the components that have been numbered with a 9 to a number 8, without affecting the operation of the circuit?

Expert Solution & Answer

To determine

Whether it is possible to change the components that are numbered with an 8 to a number 9 and the component that have numbered with the number 9 to the number 8 without affecting the circuit operation.

Explanation of Solution

Consider that the schematic diagram shows the circuit operation and not the wiring of the components. The wiring diagram is drawn that is based on how the components are numbered, thus it shows how the wiring is done.

The components in schematic diagrams are numbered in the sequence of connection order.

Refer to the circuit shown in Figure 23-1 as shown in the text book.

Consider that the machine consist of the three motors and when it is started there is a time delay of 10 sec. As the start button is pressed the circuit gets completed with the start button and the motor coil andTR1. Thus, as the coil 1 is energized the motor 1 starts and the auxiliary contact M1 is in parallel to the start button that is in closed position. Thus, the current starts to flow through the auxiliary contact as soon as the start button is released. And in the sequence the two motors start to work automatically with a difference time of ten sec and with the help of the relay coil one and two.

This shows that TR1 is numbered at 8 and TR2 is numbered at 9 in the schematic diagram.

The number changing of the components is not practical as each of the components is assigned a specific number in a schematic diagram.

Consider that the two relays one and two are interchanged with their position then, then, the motor M3 works when the relay TR1 is closed and the M2 works only when the TR2 is closed.

Thus, the changing of the component numbers 8 to 9 or other way leads to the disturbance in the sequence of the operation of all three motors.

Q4/ A compressor is driven motor by mean of a flat belt of thickness 10 mm and a width of 250 mm. The motor pulley is 300 mm diameter and run at 900 rpm and the compressor pulley is 1500 mm diameter. The shaft center distance is 1.5 m. The angle of contact of the smaller pulley is 220° and on the larger pulley is 270°. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the small pulley is 0.3, and between the belt and the large pulley is 0.25. The maximum allowable belt stress is 2 MPa and the belt density is 970 kg/m³. (a) What is the power capacity of the drive and (b) If the small pulley replaced by V-grooved pulley of diameter 300 mm, grooved angle of 34° and the coefficient of friction between belt and grooved pulley is 0.35. What will be the power capacity in this case, assuming that the diameter of the large pulley remain the same of 1500 mm.
