The mechanism for the reaction of cyclohexyl methyl ketone with excess bromine in the presence of sodium hydroxide is to be stated.

Concept introduction:

The mechanism for haloform reaction is nucleophilic acyl substitution. Hydroxide ion acts as a nucleophile and the leaving group is CX3. In the first step of this reaction, addition of hydroxide ion takes place on the carbonyl group and then CX3 group leaves followed by fast proton transfer from the acid.
