Chapter 22, Problem 61E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

If a metal complex is octahedral and has three types of ligands say A, B and C, different formulae can be assigned as there are 6 coordinate sites. This is because these three ligands can be in different ratios to make up totally 6 ligands

Concept Introduction:

A coordination complex has central metal atom or ion. It is surrounded by ligands (Complexing agents) which may be molecules or ions. In an octahedral complex, six ligands are symmetrically arranged around the central atom giving rise to eight faces.

In an octahedral complex the degeneracy of the central atom having d-subshell is removed. The ligands may be different, but all such complexes have common octahedral structure.
