Concept explainers
Concept introduction: Phagocytosis is a process in which phagocytes are involved in engulfing, destroying, and removing pathogenic microorganisms and foreign debris from the body. Phagocytes (also called antigen-presenting cells) are the cells that protect the body by ingesting the invading of foreign particles. They fight against infections and maintain healthy tissues by removing the dead cells.

Answer to Problem 1DYB
Correct answer: Neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells are phagocytes except T-lymphocytes. Hence, the correct answer is option c.
Explanation of Solution
Reason for the correct answer:
Lymphocyte carries adaptive immune responses. There are two classes of immune responses seen in lymphocytes, one is antibody-mediated response and the other is cell-mediated response that are carried out by two different classes of lymphocytes called B cells and T cells, respectively. In cell-mediated responses, the activated T-lymphocytes react directly against a foreign antigen, which is present on the host cell.
Option b. is given as “T-lymphocytes”.
T lymphocytes are cells of the immune system that are responsible for eliciting immune response along with B lymphocytes. T-lymphocytes help to elicit immune response upon encountering an antigen and activate other immune cells for eliminating the antigen from the body. T-lymphocytes are not phagocytic cells.
Hence, the correct answer is option b.
Reasons for the incorrect answers:
Option a. is given as “neutrophils”.
This is an incorrect statement because neutrophils are the phagocytes that are capable of creating a defense against the microorganisms. This plays an important role in the innate immune system.
Hence, option a. is incorrect.
Option c. is given as “macrophages”.
This is an incorrect statement because macrophages are the phagocytes (antigen-presenting cells) that are involved in processing and presenting the antigens for detection by certain lymphocytes such as T cells.
Hence, option c. is incorrect.
Option d. is given as “dendritic cells”.
This is an incorrect statement because dendritic cells contain specific antigen-presenting cells that process the antigen material that is present on the surface of the cell to T-cells of the immune system.
Hence, option d. is incorrect.
Hence options a., c., and d. are incorrect.
Neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells are phagocytes except T-lymphocytes.
