To determine:

Why the observation is relevant to evaluate the hypothesis that these species arose by sympatric speciation as there are hundreds of species of cichlid fish in Lake Victoria in Africa. Some scientists argue that they evolved sympatrically, but recent studies of the lake suggest that it periodically dried out, leaving a series of small ponds. 

Introduction:

Speciation is defined as the evolutionary process which involves the formation of new and distinct species. It involves the splitting of one evolutionary lineage into more than two important lineages. There are four types of speciation such as allopatric speciation, sympatric speciation, parapatric speciation, and quantum speciation.
