To explain: How cell size and content determine the classification of anemia.
Concept introduction: Anemia is a condition in which the total number of red blood cells in the blood circulation is reduced or decrease in the quality or quantity of hemoglobin.
Explanation of Solution
Anemia occurs due to the following conditions:
- Decreased production of erythrocyte;
- Bleeding or blood loss;
- Increased destruction of erythrocytes;
- Combination of blood loss, decreased production, and increased destruction of erythrocytes.
The most common classification of anemia is based on hemoglobin content and changes that affect the size of the cells. The type of anemia can be identified by the terms that reflect its characteristics. The terms with the suffix –cyte or –cytic refer to cell size. The terms with suffix –chromic refer to hemoglobin content. Some of the additional terms that represent the abnormalities of red blood cells are anisocytosis (various sizes) and poikilocytosis (various shapes).
