Interpretation: The effect of the double bond within the hydrocarbon chain of a fatty acid is to be explained.
Introduction:
• A fatty acid is a type of lipid which contains a carboxylic group with a long hydrocarbon chain.
• Fatty acids may be saturated or unsaturated depending upon the carbon chain. If a hydrocarbon chain contains saturated carbon –carbon single bonds, then the fatty acid is called saturated fatty acid.
• If a hydrocarbon chain is unsaturated containing carbon-carbon double or triple bonds, the fatty acid is called unsaturated fatty acid. Unsaturated fatty acids may be monounsaturated (containing one double bond) or polyunsaturated (containing more than one double bond).
