a.
To define:
What is EPO, and why does it provide a performance advantage in athletics, particularly endurance events like rowing and cycling? How might taking EPO kill a person?
Introduction:
There are numerous types of performance-enhancing drugs are available, such as stimulants, anabolic steroids, diuretics, and human growth hormones. Erythropoietin or hematopoietin (EPO) is one of the performance-enhancing drugs, which is used for both therapeutic purposes and also misused in sports for improving performance. The erythropoietin is a hormone secreted by the kidneys. It plays a major role in the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. The red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to the body.
b.
To define:
Some cyclist prefers high altitude training to increase their red blood cell number. While, some athletes prefer special low-oxygen tents. Which approach is more acceptable than taking EPO or recombinant EPO? Why?
