Calculating conversion costs and unit cost
Russia Spring produces premium bottled water. Russia Spring purchases artesian water, stores the water in large tanks, and then runs the water through two processes: filtration and bottling.
During February, the filtration process incurred the following costs in processing 150.000 liters:
Wages of workers operating filtration equipment $ 19,950
Manufacturing
Water 50,000
Russia Spring had no beginning Work-in-Process Inventory in the filtration Department in February.
Requirements
1. Compute the February conversion costs in the Filtration Department.
2- The Filtration Department completely processed 150,000 liters in February. What
was the filtration cost per liter?

- Helsinki Inc. produces premium bottled water. Helsinki purchases artesian water, stores the water in large tanks, and then runs the water through two processes: Filtration, where workers microfilter and ozonate the water Bottling, where workers bottle and package the filtered water During December, the filtration process incurs the following costs in processing 200,000 liters: Wages of workers operating the filtration equipment $11,100 Wages of workers operating ozonation equipment $12,850 Manufacturing overhead allocated to filtration $24,050 Water $120,000 We now consider Helsinki's second process-Bottling. In the Bottling Department, workers bottle the filtered water and pack the bottles into boxes. Conversion costs are incurred evenly throughout the Bottling process, but packaging materials are not added until the end of the process. December data from the Bottling Department is given below: Beginning work in process inventory (40% of the way through the process) 9,000…arrow_forwardHelsinki Inc. produces premium bottled water. Now, assume that the total costs of the filtration process listed in the previous chart yield 160,000 liters that are completely filtered and ozonated, while the remaining 40,000 liters are only partway through the process at the end of December. Is the cost per completely filtered and ozonated liter higher, lower, or the same as in question 2? Why? At Helsinki, water is added at the beginning of the filtration…arrow_forwardHelsinki Inc. produces premium bottled water. Forming the handles require mixing the raw materials, mokding and drying. After the drying process, the screwdrivers are completed by assembling the handles and the shanks and packing for shipment. The following information relates to the molding process: There was no opening WIP stock 5,000 kilos of material at s43.08 per kilo entered the process Direct materials added Direct wages incurred Production overhead Normal loss is 4% of input Sg2,000 65-700 75-100 A quality control check was done at the end of the molding process and 350 handles were rejected as spoilage. Spoiled units, regardless of their degree of completion, are sold at $45.00 each, and it is company's policy to credit the process account with the scrap value of the normal loss units. Closing WIP was 800 units but these were incomplete, having reached the following percentages of completion for each of the elements of cost listed Input…arrow_forwardRussia Spring produces premium bottled water. The costs per unit, for 20,000 filters, are as follows. Direct materials $6.00 Direct labor 7.00 Variable overhead 1.00 Fixed overhead 2.00 Total costs $16.00 Irrigation Products has offered to sell 20,000 filters to Filtration for $16 per filter. If Filtration accepts Irrigation Products’ offer, the facilities used to manufacture filters could be used to produce refrigerator filtration units. Revenues from the sale of refrigerator filtration units are estimated at $54,000, with variable costs amounting to 50% of sales. In addition, $1 per unit of the fixed overhead associated with the manufacture of secondary water irrigation filters could be eliminated. Yes, the cost to purchase the filters is less than the cost to…arrow_forwardThe Brite Beverage Company bottles soft drinks into aluminum cans. The manufacturing process consists of three activities: Mixing: water, sugar, and beverage concentrate are mixed. Filling: mixed beverage is filled into 12-oz. cans. Packaging: properly filled cans are boxed into cardboard “fridge packs.” The activity costs associated with these activities for the period are as follows: Mixing $354,000 Filling 313,000 Packaging 138,000 Total $805,000 The activity costs do not include materials costs, which are ignored for this analysis. Each can is expected to contain 12 ounces of beverage. Thus, after being filled, each can is automatically weighed. If a can is too light, it is rejected, or “kicked,” from the filling line prior to being packaged. The primary cause of kicks is heat expansion. With heat expansion, the beverage overflows during filling, resulting in underweight cans. This process begins by mixing and filling 11,960,000 cans during the period, of which only…arrow_forward

It started production of 9,000 cases of the drink in October and shipped 7,800 cases to retailers. (Bremen holds no finished goods inventory.) The costs of the resources used by Bremen in October consist of the following. Materials $ 87,523 Conversion costs (labor and overhead) 134,975 Required: The production supervisor estimates that the ending work in process is 55 percent complete on October 31. If this offer is accepted, the supervisor's salary and all of the variable costs can be avoided. The special equipment used to make the part has no salvage value or other use. None of the allocated general overhead would be avoided if the part were purchased. Also, the space used to make the part could be used to make more of one of the company's other products, generating an additional segment margin of $33,500 per year.
