Summary Introduction

To label:

The mastication and expression muscles in the given figure.

Introduction:

The striated skeletal muscles present in the face that are involved in mastication and facial expressions are called facial muscles. These muscles are located just under the skin and originates from the skull bone’s surface. The facial nerve supplies the facial muscles.

The muscles that are involved in chewing of food are called masticatory muscles and the other provide face expressions. The Temporalis, Masseter, Lateral and Medial pterygoid muscles are involved in the mastication of food. The muscle involved in face expressions are zygomaticus major, zygomaticus minor, occipitofrontalis, orbiculari oculi, and orbicularis oris.

The temporalis muscle originated from temporal fossa and is covered with a hard fascia. This muscle is involved in posterior side pulling of the jaw. The occipitalis muscle is rectangular shape and present at the base of the skull. This muscle allows the scalp to move in the backward direction. The masseter muscle is quadrilateral in shape and innervated by the mandibular nerve. This muscle allows mouth to close and mandible to elevate. The sternocleidomastoid muscle superficial largest cervical muscle that allows neck flexion and opposite side head rotation. This muscle is overlaps with the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The platysma muscle allows to draw mouth corners inferiorly and provide fright expressions.

The forehead is covered by the frontalis muscle that is innervated by the cranial nerve VII. The muscle is present around eyes and help to raise the eyebrows and forms wrinkles on forehead. The orbicularis oculi muscle located around the eyes and allows closure of the eyelids. The zygomaticus major muscle is a facial expression muscle that allow mouth angle to draw in lateral and upward direction. The zygomaticus minor muscle originates from the zygomatic bone and allows upper lip to elevate. The orbicularis oris muscle is present circularly around the lips. This muscle controls lips and mouth movements. The buccinator muscle underlies the cheeks and holds the teeth to help in chewing.

9. Aerobic respiration of one lipid molecule. The lipid is composed of one glycerol molecule connected to two fatty acid tails. One fatty acid is 12 carbons long and the other fatty acid is 18 carbons long in the figure below. Use the information below to determine how much ATP will be produced from the glycerol part of the lipid. Then, in part B, determine how much ATP is produced from the 2 fatty acids of the lipid. Finally put the NADH and ATP yields together from the glycerol and fatty acids (part A and B) to determine your total number of ATP produced per lipid. Assume no other carbon source is available. 18 carbons fatty acids 12 carbons 9 glycerol A. Glycerol is broken down to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, a glycolysis intermediate via the following pathway shown in the figure below. Notice this process costs one ATP but generates one FADH2. Continue generating ATP with glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate using the standard pathway and aerobic respiration. glycerol glycerol-3- phosphate…
