Concept explainers
Introduction :
Acellular slime molds have a plasmodium stage in their life cycles. Plasmodium consists of millions of nuclei that share one single, gigantic cell with no membranes to distinguish them. It has an odd mode of life, with lots of uncommon properties. The word slime mold is used to apply to the acellular slime molds for the remainder of this study.
Answer to Problem 8STP
Correct answer :
The correct answer is option (C) plasmodium with many nuclei.
Explanation of Solution
Explanation/justification for the correct answer :
Option (C) plasmodium with many nuclei. The acellular molds have a plasmodium stage in their life cycle that made of millions of nuclei. So, the correct answer is option (c).
Explanation for incorrect answer :
Option (A) cytoplasm with many cells. Both the cellular and acellular slime mold has masses of cytoplasm. So, this is an incorrect option.
Option (B) locomotion by means of cilia. Both the cellular and acellular slime mold move by the help of cilia. So, this is an incorrect answer.
Option (C) reproduction by fragmentation. Molds reproduce by the process of fragmentation. So, this is an incorrect answer.
