Answer to Problem 86E

The ratio of the power dissipation in the internal resistance to the power dissipation in load is 1.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for the power dissipation in the internal resistance.

    Pr=ε2r(R+r)2        (1)

Here, Pr power across the internal resistance, ε is the battery EMF, R is the load resistance and r is the battery resistance.

Write the expression for the power dissipation across in the load.

    PR=ε2R(R+r)2        (2)

Here, PR power across the load resistance.

Write the expression for the raio of the dissipated in the internal resistance to that of the load resistance.

    P=PrPR        (3)

Conclusion:

Substitute 12V for ε, 0.005ohm for r and 0.005ohm for R in equation (1).

    Pr=(12V)2(0.005ohm)((0.005ohm)+(0.005ohm))2=7200W

Substitute 12V for ε, 0.005ohm for r and 0.005ohm for R in equation (2).

    PR=(12V)2(0.005ohm)((0.005ohm)+(0.005ohm))2=7200W

Substitute 7200W for Pr and 7200W for PR in equation (3).

    P=7200W7200W=1

Thus, the ratio of the power dissipation in the internal resistance to the power dissipation in load is 1.

Answer to Problem 86E

The ratio of the power dissipation in the internal resistance to the power dissipation in load is 0.01.

Explanation of Solution

Write the expression for the power dissipation in the internal resistance.

    Pr=ε2r(R+r)2

Write the expression for the power dissipation across in the load.

    PR=ε2R(R+r)2

Write the expression for the raio of the dissipated in the internal resistance to that of the load resistance.

    P=PrPR

Conclusion:

Substitute 12V for ε, 0.005ohm for r and 0.05ohm for R in equation (1).

    Pr=(12V)2(0.005ohm)((0.05ohm)+(0.005ohm))2=238.01W

Substitute 12V for ε, 0.005ohm for r and 0.05ohm for R in equation (2).

    PR=(12V)2(0.05ohm)((0.05ohm)+(0.005ohm))2=2380.16W

Substitute 238.01W for Pr and 2380.16W for PR in equation (3).

    P=238.01W2380.16W0.01

Thus, the ratio of the power dissipation in the internal resistance to the power dissipation in load is 0.01.
