Tees Does it matter what kind of tee a golfer places the ball on? The company that manufactures “Stinger” tees claims that the thinner shaft and smaller head lessen resistance and drag, reducing spin and allowing the ball to travel farther. In August 2003, Golf Laboratories, Inc., compared the distance traveled by golf balls hit off regular wooden tees to those hit off Stinger tees. All the balls were struck by the same golf club using a robotic device set to swing the club head at approximately 95 miles per hour. Summary statistics from the test are shown in the table below. Assume that 6 balls were hit off each tee and that the data were suitable for inference.
Is there evidence that balls hit off the Stinger tees have a higher initial velocity?

- When solving a uniform motion problem, how does creating a table help you?arrow_forwardHas the principle of comparison been addressed in this experimental design? A company that manufactures golf balls produces a new type of ball that is supposed to travel significantly farther than the company's previous golf ball. To determine this, 40 new-style golf balls and 40 original- style golf balls are randomly selected from the company's production line on a specific day. The balls are then placed in bag and shaken. A golf pro then selects a ball and hits it. The distance the ball travels is then measured. The bag is shaken again, and the golf O Yes, because the balls are randomly selected, the distances of the new ball can be compared to the distances of the original ball. O Yes, because the original ball type is included in this experiment, the distances the different balls travel can be accurately compared. O No, because a placebo ball was not used, a comparison cannot be made to determine if the new ball travels significantly farther. pro selects another ball to hit. - A new type of crank for bicycles called the Powercam relies on a pushing motion rather than a circular motion. The company that markets this crank plans a test of five riders who will travel a 100-mile route once with the Powercam and once with a conventional crank. The company claims that the new crank reduces the time needed to cover the 100 miles. The times in hours for the five riders are as follows: Rider Powercam Conventional 5.1 1 4 4.4 4.6 4.7 4.8 4.9 5.3 5.1 4.9 5.2 Is there sufficient evidence in the data to support the claim that the new crank reduces the time needed to cover the 100 miles? Use a 5% significance level and assume that both population distributions are normal. (a) State the null and alternative hypotheses for the test. (b) Identify the correct formula for the test statistic and calculate its value. (c) Identify the rejection region. (d) Make a decision whether to reject Ho. (e) State a conclusion in the context of the problem.arrow_forwardTwo LORAN (long-range navigation) stations A and B are situated along a straight shore, where A is 200 miles west of B. These stations transmit radio signals at a speed of 186 miles per millisecond. The captain of a ship traveling on the open sea intends to enter a harbor that is located 40 miles east of station A. Due to its location, the harbor experiences a time difference in receiving the signals from both stations. The captain navigates the ship into the harbor by following a path where the ship experiences the same time difference as the harbor. (a) What time difference between station signals should the captain be looking for the ship to make a successful entry into the harbor? (b) If the desired time difference is achieved, determine the location of the ship if it is 75 miles offshore.arrow_forwardA dietitian wishes to see if a person’s cholesterol level will change if the diet is supplemented by a certain mineral. Five randomly selected subjects were pre-tested, and then they took the mineral supplement for a 6-week period. - Josh wants to convince his mother to stop buying single-ply toilet paper. Josh believes that even though Fluffy, a two-ply toilet paper costs more, it will last longer because it is more absorbent. To help substantiate his claim, Josh performed a study. He purchased a random sample of 18 rolls of Fluffy. For each roll, he determined how many squares are needed to completely absorb one-quarter cup of water. Here is a dotplot of the data. The mean of the sample is 24.444 squares with a standard deviation of 2.45 squares. Single-ply toilet paper requires 26 squares to absorb one-quarter cup of water. Josh would like to carry out a test to determine if there is convincing evidence that the mean number of squares of Fluffy that are needed to absorb one-quarter cup of water is fewer than 26 squares. What is the appropriate test statistic and P-value of this test? At wind speeds above 1000 centimeters per second (cm/sec), significant sand-moving events begin to occur. Wind speeds below 1000 cm/sec deposit sand and wind speeds above 1000 cm/sec move sand to new locations. The cyclic nature of wind and moving sand determines the shape and location of large dunes. At a test site, the prevailing direction of the wind did not change noticeably. However, the velocity did change. Sixty-two wind speed readings gave an average velocity of x = 1075 cm/sec. Based on long-term experience, o can be assurhed to be 250 cm/sec. (a) Find a 95% confidence interval for the population mean wind speed at this site. (Round your answers to the nearest whole number.) lower limit cm/sec upper limit cm/sec (b) Does the confidence interval indicate that the population mean wind speed is such that the sand is always moving at this site?
