Interpretation:
Glucose, sucrose, maltose, fructose, cellulose, lactose, glycogen, galactose, starch, and ribose has to be classified as monosaccharide, disaccharide, or polysaccharide.
Concept Introduction:
Simplest carbohydrates are known as monosaccharides. They contain three to six carbons generally in a chain form with a carbonyl group present in the terminal or the adjacent carbon atom from the terminal. Monosaccharides contains only one sugar unit.
Carbohydrates that are composed of two monosaccharide units are known as disaccharides. This is formed when one hydroxyl group of one monosaccharide reacts with a hydroxyl group of another monosaccharide.
Complex carbohydrates are known as polysaccharides. This contains more number of monsaccharide units. On hydrolysis, a large number of monosaccharide units are obtained.
