Chapter 20, Problem 32RQE

(a)

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Equation for saponification of tripalmitin has to be written and also the product obtained is soap or not has to be given.

Concept Introduction:

In presence of water and acid, the esters undergo hydrolysis to form carboxylic acid and alcohol.  Acid acts as a catalyst in this reaction.  As a water molecule cleaves the bond present in the ester, it is known as hydrolysis.

The above reaction takes place in presence of base and water also.  If base is used for the hydrolysis, the carboxylic acid formed will be in its salt form and the reaction is known as saponification reaction.  If fatty acid salt is obtained on saponification reaction, then the fatty acid salt is known as soap.
