Chapter 20, Problem 20PE
Program Plan Intro

Shared-Nothing architecture:

  • A Shared-Nothing Architecture (SN) is a distributed-computing architecture where each update request is satisfied by a single node such as a processor, memory or storage unit.
  • The goal is to reduce contention among nodes.
  • Nodes do not share memory. An alternative architecture share everything. Here all requests are satisfied through random combinations of nodes.
  • Multiple nodes can try to access and update the same data simultaneously, therefore it may cause contention.
  • SN prevents single points of failure and allows the system to continue working despite failures.
  • A shared-nothing system divides its data among many nodes.

Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA):

It is the technology for memory access on a remote machine without getting the operating system involved.
