To analyze:
Why planting potatoes may be preferable to planting potato seeds, and which potatoes must be chosen for planting.
Introduction:
Potatoes can reproduce through both sexual and asexual means.
Explanation of Solution
Potatoes can reproduce sexually, by flowering, pollination and seed production. These seeds can give rise to new plants. However, new potato plants can be obtained by planting potatoes from the parent plant. This is a form of asexual reproduction, and the new plant will be genetically identical to the parent. The farmer can therefore choose to plant potatoes that yield more and are tolerant to environmental stresses. Planting potatoes may be preferable, since the genetic composition of the plant is preserved in asexual reproduction. Potatoes which possess the characteristics that the farmer wants will be chosen for propagation.
Planting potatoes that are adaptable to their environment and tolerant to stresses may be preferable, since the genetic composition of the plant is preserved in asexual reproduction. The farmer will choose the potatoes with the characteristics that she/he wants to propagate in the next crop, such as high yielding or stress tolerant potatoes.

- In ordinary English, we use the word fruit to mean something sweet and juicy; however, the following things are fruits: peanut shells, pea pods, bell peppers, and chili peppers. What is the characteristic that lets us know these really are fruits even though they are not sweet? In contrast, bananas are fruits that do not have this characteristic (they are sterile and new plants must be grown from buds that sprout near the base of the plant).arrow_forwardThe physical and purposeful process of crossing the pollen of one plant to the stigma of another plant is known as cross pollination or A self pollination artificial fertilization cross fertilizationarrow_forwardName one plant each where pollination occurs with the help of : a) Water. b) Batsarrow_forward

As he cuts open the papaya, they discover great numbers of slime-covered seed inside, surrounded by soft flesh and soft skin. Before papaya fruits ripen and the seeds inside them mature, their flesh is bitter or sour. Only later does it become tasty. Discuss how this feature improves the odds for the plant's reproductive success and identify the possible agents to disperse the seeds.arrow_forwardConduct research on the history, origin, and cultural significance of chia seeds. What does this indicate about the pollination process and success? A) 100% success: 100 pollen grains grew to 50 ovules, two to each, and double fertilization occurred. B) 100% success: Only 50% of the pollen grains germinated, but each produced 2 sperms to complete double fertilization in 50 seeds.
