Initially the domain Archaea was considered to be unique group of bacteria but in 1977 the Archaea came to be viewed as distinctive domain that distinguishes from eukaryotes and bacteria on the basis of their biochemical characteristics. The three types of archaea distinguished by their unique habitats are methanogens, halophiles and thermoacidophiles.
