Chapter 2, Problem 77RE
CAT Scans (Refer to Exercise 76.) Four X-ray beams are aimed at four cells, as shown in the following figure. Source: The Mathematics Teacher.
- (a) Suppose the attenuation values for beams 1, 2, 3, and 4 are 0.60, 0.75, 0.65, and 0.70, respectively. Do we have enough information to determine the values of a, b, c, and d? Explain.
- (b) Suppose we have the data from part (a), as well as the following values for d. Find the values for a, b, and c, and draw conclusions about cells A, B, C, and D in each case.
- (i) 0.33
- (ii) 0.43
- (c) Two X-ray beams are added, as shown in the figure. In addition to the data in part (a), we now have attenuation values for beams 5 and 6 of 0.85 and 0.50. Find the values for a, b, c, and d, and make conclusions about cells A, B, C, and D.
- (d) Six X-ray beams are not necessary because four appropriately chosen beams are sufficient. Give two examples of four beams (chosen from beams 1–6 in part (c)) that will give the solution. (Note: There are 12 possible solutions.)
- (e) Discuss what properties the four beams selected in part (d) must have in order to provide a unique solution.

Pictures of the students interviewed along with quotes of their responses are printed in the paper. Students are interviewed by a reporter "roaming" the campus selecting students to interview "haphazardly." On a particular day, the reporter interviews five students and asks them if they feel there is adequate student parking on campus. Four of the students say, "no." - A company that manufactures golf balls produces a new type of ball that is supposed to travel significantly farther than the company's previous golf ball. To determine this, 40 new-style golf balls and 40 original-style golf balls are randomly selected from the company's production line on a specific day. The balls are then placed in a bag and shaken. A golf pro then selects a ball and hits it using a driver. The distance the ball travels is then measured. Which of the following is a benefit of having replication in the experiment? Repeating the experiment will allow the company to compare the distances traveled by the new type of golf ball from both experiments. O Having a large number of each type of golf ball will allow for a good comparison of the differences in distances traveled for the two types of balls. The bag is shaken again, and the golf pro selects another ball and hits it with the same driver.
