Concept Introduction: Free rotation around the single bond of carbon can easily occur since the electron density around the carbon atoms exists between the nuclei of two carbons. The rotation around the bond does not alter the electron distribution over the given molecule.
The free rotation of single bonds can be restricted by the delocalization of non-bonded electrons (resonance) between the involving atoms.
