Concept explainers
To list: The five movements that occur primarily in each of the three cardinal planes.
Concept introduction: Cardinal planes are imaginary planes that bisect the mass of human body into three dimensions. The three cardinal planes include sagittal plane, frontal plane and transverse plane.
Explanation of Solution
The plane where the forward and backward movements of the body and its segments occur is known as sagittal planes. The plane where the lateral movements of the body and its segments occur is known as frontal planes. The plane where the horizontal movements of the body and its segments occur is known as transverse planes.
The movements in the sagittal planes are as follows:
- Marching
- Bowling
- Cycling
- Running
- Forward roll
The movements in the frontal planes are as follows:
- Cartwheel
- Jumping jacks
- Side stepping
- Side kicks
- Side crunches
The movements in the transverse planes are as follows:
- Twist by deep-sea divers
- Trampolin jumping twist
- Dancer’s pirouette
- Twist made by the athlete before throwing the shotput
- Russian twist exercise
