Case summary:
The PSD in W has four schools with 2760 students and 296 employees. In 2013, it won the BNQ award. PSD has a higher graduation rate and higher percentage of students attending college than other schools in the county, state and surrounding districts. Surveys have shown higher parent satisfaction with education quality, better performance in dropout and truancy rates, and student volunteering.
PSD uses the PDCA planning process. The “plan” stage happens in spring: past performance is evaluated, and goals are set for the coming year. In the “do” stage, the administration and various departments create immediate action plans. By summer, the plans are approved, and resources are allocated. The strategies are implemented in the fall and in the “check/study” stage, administration checks whether the plans achieved the goals set in the planning stage.
In the final “act” stage, top management and the board analyse the results, narrow down areas for improvement and make recommendations.
With the new year, the cycle starts again.
To determine: Specific processes in a service organization you are familiar with that the PDCA cycle might be applied to, perhaps even your own university?
