Concept introduction: Fluid deficit in the body system leads to dehydration. Dehydration is the condition that is opposite to edema. It occurs due to inadequate intake of fluids or increased loss of fluids from the body or both. Dehydration that occurs due to increased fluid loss affects the extracellular compartment in a large scale. The weight of the person is used to measure the extent of dehydration qualitatively.
