Interpretation: The work done for the isothermal expansion of methane gas against a constant external pressure of 200Torr under given conditions has to be calculated.

Concept introduction: The properties of the system such as temperature, pressure, enthalpy, entropy are changes in thermodynamic process.  The second law of thermodynamics allows the classification of all processes into two main categories that is reversible and irreversible processes.  The isothermal processes are those in which the temperature remains constant throughout the process.  The work under the influence of an external pressure is either done by the system or on the system.  The formula to calculate the work done against an external pressure is given below as,
