The functional dependency is a relationship that exists at the time of one attribute distinctively determines another.

Example:

NoOfBoxes → CookieCost

In the above expression, NoOfBoxes attribute determines CookieCost attribute, left term “NoOfBoxes” refers the determinant, and “→” defines the relationship. That is, the CookieCost is functionally dependent on NoOfBoxes. This expression defines the relationship between NoOfBoxes and CookieCost.
