The electronegative atom such as N, O, or F attached directly to a hydrogen atom serves as a potential H-bond donor while atoms with lone pairs such as N, O, and F serve as potential H-bond acceptors. In the two molecules given, the greater the number of potential H-bond donors and acceptors, the greater is the strength of hydrogen bonding, thus, higher is the boiling point.
