Interpretation:

You should have written observation and result in your notebook in the lab as you are performing an experiment is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

➢ A chemistry laboratory is a facility that provides controlled conditions in which chemistry experiments, research and measurement may be performed.

➢ The lab notebook is an important primary record in chemical laboratory and it is an important part of academic grade. It is scientific legacy in the lab.

Answer to Problem 1E

Well recorded notebook increases knowledge of the experiment and for the better understanding of the experiment. Therefore, the lab notebook is important while performing experiments.

Explanation of Solution

A lab notebook is a complete record of procedures (the actions you take), the reagents used, the observations make (these are the data) and thoughts to pass on to other researchers.

Basic rules for lab notebook:

• Left blank pages at the starting for index purposes

• Write all the constant with unit and dimension

• Record all the observations with explanation

• Write down the result and conclusion

Lab Notebook contains following records:

1) Notebook name.

2) Title page: it contain name of researcher, date, instructor name and general project name or title of experiment.

3) Table content: page number, date, subject/experiment etc.

4) Body of notebook:

• Date

• Title or Goal: brief statement of purpose.

• Materials: equipment and reagent or chemical used in experiment.

• Data: Protocols, calculations, chemical reaction, constant information etc.

• Observations: it contains reading values of your experiments.

• Conclusion: analysis of experimental readings.

• Result and graph: it contains final calculations, graphs and interpretations.

Importance of having lab notebook while performing experiment:

➢ It gives guidelines for performing the same experiment which has been performed.

➢ It helps to keep track of work.

➢ It record the ideas.

➢ It is scientific legacy in the lab for patent and research purpose.

Well maintained and recorded notebook increases knowledge and better understanding of the experiment. Therefore, the lab notebook is important while performing experiments.
