To answer:
Anthrax is caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The pathogen avoids the body’s defenses against the disease by synthesizing an outer glycoprotein covering made from D-glutamic acid. This covering is not digestible by white blood cells that normally engulf bacteria. Why the covering is indigestible is to be determined.
Introduction:
Bacillus anthracis refers to gram positive bacteria. It is a rod-shaped bacterium and its size ranges from 1 to 9 µm. Anthrax produces two types of spores that may exists in the soil, even for a decade. Anthrax produces D-glutamic acid and acts as a covering layer that is not digested by eukaryotic immune cells.

A) True B) Falsearrow_forwardYou have received a laboratory report showing the presence of a HIGH concentration of ketone bodies in the urine of a patient (ketosis). a) What disease would you suspect in this patient and why? b) Explain why ketone bodies accumulate in such patients, and the sequence of events that lead to their formation. Include the location, any pathways impacted, and the purpose of ketone formation. c) Give the names of the three different ketone bodies, and indicate which ones are used for fuel in extrahepatic cells. d) When ketones are used by extrahepatic cells for fuel, why is a new enzyme used in the pathway (why not simply reverse the pathway used to form ketones)? - Why does the skin turn yellow when it inadvertently comes in contact with HNO3? What Happens When a Protein Undergoes Hydrolysis?arrow_forwardA certain protein is exposed to high levels of β- Mercaptoethanol (BME). Even after the BME is removed by dialysis, only a small portion of the protein is functional.
