Chapter 2, Problem 1CRCAQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The relation between the process of aging and low weight.
Introduction:
Aging is characterized by certain structural as well as functional alterations that begin accumulating in an individual as time passes. It is a complex process that is explained by two different theories, namely mitochondrial theory and genetic theory. These theories support the idea that aging results due to a build up of free radicals and shortening of telomere length.

- "My daughter, Hannah, has been pestering me about changing the way we eat and getting more exercise. She says she is just trying to lose weight, but ever since I learned I have type 2 diabetes I know she's been worried about me. What I didn't realize until last night is that she is worried about herself, too. All through dinner she was really quiet: then suddenly she says, 'Mom, I had my fasting blood sugar tested at the health center, and guess what? They said I have pre-diabetes since my glucose level was 188 mg/dl. They told me that's the first step towards diabetes and that, if I didn't make some serious changes, I would end up just like my mom. I am not sure why but, it made me nervous.’ (Judy takes a deep breath and then tells the nutritionist) “So, I guess we both need to change some things when it comes to eating and exercising. - A male patient was admitted to hospital because his extremities were cyanotic (blue in colour) and he had some convulsions. His blood sugar levels indicated that he was hypoglycemic. The doctors initially gave him glucose intravenously as well as adding it to his diet, but his blood sugar level did not stabilize. However, when the doctors introduced glucagon, the blood sugar levels stabilized. The patient was diagnosed as having a deficiency in glucagon. The liver cannot break down glycogen to glucose, so the blood glucose remains low. c. The adipose tissue breaks down fat to form glycogen, keeping blood glucose low. d. - At Kate's next appointment, Paula showed Kate how to use a glucose meter. She instructed Kate to measure her blood glucose level twice a day before and after breakfast and dinner. Paula explains to Kate that her pre-meal blood glucose level should be 110 mg/dLmg/dL or less, and if it increases by more than 50 mg/dLmg/dL, she needs to lower the amount of carbohydrates she consumes. Kate and Paula proceed to plan several meals. Because a meal should contain about 45 to 60 gg of carbohydrates, they combined fruits and vegetables that have high and low levels of carbohydrates in the same meal to stay within the recommended range. Kate and Paula also discuss the fact that complex carbohydrates in the body take longer to break down into glucose and, therefore, raise the blood sugar level more gradually. Kate increased her exercise to walking 30 minutes twice a day. She began to change her diet by eating 6 small meals a day consisting of more fruits and vegetables without starch such as green…arrow_forwardAnita has been feeling extremely tired, shaky, and confused.
