The steady state means a situation which is independent from time. Insteady state, the heat flux does not depend on time. Whereas, in transient heat transfer, the heat flux depends on the time. During the transient heat transfer the temperature of the medium varies with time and position both. The transient state heat transfer is also known as unsteady state heat transfer.
The heart transfer depends on the rate of heat transfer and direction. It classified as follows:

- Two dimensional
- Three dimensional
In one-dimensional heat transfer the temperature variation takes place in only one direction and most of the heat transfer occurs in only one direction. While in case of two dimensional heat transfer the temperature variation takes place in two directions and the heat transfer flows in both directions.
