Chapter 2, Problem 1BYB
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The basic characteristics of life.
Introduction:
In this world, two type of substance living and non living exist. There are certain characters of a substance, which define it as living or non living.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
For a life form there are several characteristic features that includes the following
- The life forms have to responds to change in environment;
- The life forms have to grow and make necessary changes when needed.
- They possess the ability to reproduce to maintain their own race
- They must possess
metabolic machinery. - They have to maintain homeostasis (the constant interval environment)
- They have to be made up of cells
- They have to pass characters from parents to offspring
Conclusion
To differentiate from non living forms, the life posses seven basic characteristics, reproduction, growth, response to stimuli, possess metabolic processes, ability to maintain homeostasis and hereditary.
