Chapter 2, Problem 1ASA
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The Rf values for the given chromatograph of a mixture are to be stated.

Concept introduction:

Chromatography is the technique used to identify the components of a mixture. The division of the distance covered by the component of a compound to the distance covered by solvent in the chromatography technique is known as the Rf value. The full form of Rf value is retention value.

Answer to Problem 1ASA

The Rf values for the given chromatograph of a mixture which contains compounds A, B, C and D are 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 respectively.

Explanation of Solution

The chromatograph for a mixture that is prepared by a student is shown below.

Figure 1

The modified chromatogram with proper divided parts is shown below.

Figure 2

According to the above shown chromatogram, four compounds A, B, C and D are present in the mixture.

The total distance travelled by the solvent is L.

The total distance travelled by the compound A is L/4.

The total distance travelled by the compound B is L/2.

The total distance travelled by the compound C is 3L/4.

The total distance travelled by the compound D is L.

The expression to represent the Rf value is given below.

Rf=DistancetravelledbythesolutefrombaselineDistancetravelledbythesolvent frombaseline …(1)

To calculate the Rf value for compound A, substitute the value of distance travelled by compound A and distance travelled by solute in equation (1).

Rf=L/4L=14=0.25

To calculate the Rf value for compound B, substitute the value of distance travelled by compound A and distance travelled by solute in equation (1).

Rf=L/2L=12=0.5

To calculate the Rf value for compound C, substitute the value of distance travelled by compound A and distance travelled by solute in equation (1).

Rf=3L/4L=34=0.75

To calculate the Rf value for compound D, substitute the value of distance travelled by compound A and distance travelled by solute in equation (1).

Rf=LL=1

Therefore, the Rf values are 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.

Conclusion

The Rf values for the given chromatograph of a mixture which contains compounds A, B, C and D are 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1 respectively.

A certain half-reaction has a standard reduction potential Ered +1.26 V. An engineer proposes using this half-reaction at the anode of a galvanic cell that must provide at least 1.10 V of electrical power. The cell will operate under standard conditions. Note for advanced students: assume the engineer requires this half-reaction to happen at the anode of the cell. Is there a minimum standard reduction potential that the half-reaction used at the cathode of this cell can have? If so, check the "yes" box and calculate the minimum. Round your answer to 2 decimal places. If there is no lower limit, check the "no" box..
