A major source of the CO2 that causes ocean acidification is emissions from coal burning power plants. One way to reduce these emissions is to use nuclear power to produce electricity. The proponents of nuclear power contend that it is the only way that the U.S. can increase its energy production while reducing air pollution because nuclear power plants emit few airborne pollutants. What are some of the benefits of nuclear power? What are the possible costs and dangers? Should we increase our use of nuclear power to generate electricity? If a new power plant were to be built near your home, would you prefer it to be a coal-burning plant or a nuclear plant? Explain.

- Wastes from duck farms used to wash into two shallow-water bays on Long Island, New York. The wastes, rich in nutrients such as nitrate and phos-phate, polluted the water. What do you suppose was the immediate effect of the pollutants? Can you speculate on the likely effects on the commercially valuable shellfish of the area?arrow_forwardWhat kind of risks are you exposed to each day over which you have no control? Should people who choose unhealthy lifestyles be covered by national health insurance? Explain in details. Are you willing to pay for pollution control? List the domains which you are willing to pay (examples: tires and oil disposal, the SUV - tax, etc.). What is your opinion about politicians who would like to close down EPA? Explain in pros and cons.arrow_forwardImagine you are testing water samples from a local pond for pollutants. Your lab instructor sees the results of your dissolved oxygen test and remarks that your water sample has the same dissolved oxygen level as water found near the seafloor of a dead zone. What is the dissolved oxygen level of this water sample? 650-700 ppm 350-360 ppm 80-90 ppm 7-9 ppm 2-3 ppmarrow_forward
- There are many different natural resources found in Florida. Florida's climate is warm and humid with an abundance of solar energy. The state is surrounded by ocean water and has fertile soil great for farming fruits and vegetables. Half of Florida's land is covered by trees, ideal for wildlife habitats and the production of paper products. Florida has a rich source of mineral deposits including: limestone, phosphate, and silicon deposits. Florida is also a source of natural gas and oil. Water vapor is water in its gaseous state All of the above The zone composed of air, water, and soil is referred to as Atmosphere Biosphere Hydrosphere Lithosphere 3.Do greenhouse gases serve any purpose on Earth? No, they merely block a portion of the Sun's rays. They do, in fact, keep the Earth warm. Yes, they do maintain all of the gases on our planet in place. No, they merely contribute to catastrophic climate change.arrow_forward
