The reason it is advantageous for organisms such as fungi and algae to form mutualistic relationship.

Introduction:

Mutualistic relationship is a type of symbiotic relationship between two or more organisms that live closely together and get benefited from each other.

Explanation of Solution

Lichens are the mutualistic association of algae and fungi.

Algae are autotrophic microorganisms and prepare their own food, whereas fungi are not able to prepare their own food. Algae needs proper shelter where they are protected from drying and intense sunlight.

Thus, the two basic needs of the organisms, food and shelter are fulfilled by this mutualistic relationship between fungi and algae. It is advantageous for both of them, fungi get food from algae and fungi provide shelter and protection to algae by enclosing them within filaments.

Conclusion

Almost 6% of Earth’s land surface is covered by Lichens. Lichens provide mode of survival in harsh condition where algae cannot normally survive.
