Introduction:

Meiosis is a type of cell division, which takes place in the germ-line cells of an organism to produce four gametes. In the process of meiosis, the diploid number of chromosomes reduces to become haploid (n) where each gamete receives only one of the members of homologous chromosomes. The crossing over between homologous chromosomes is an important event in prophase I of meiosis, wherein the exchange of genetic material occurs. Thus, the gametes have a non-identical haploid set of chromosomes, which plays an essential role in sexual reproduction.
