Hematocrit and the packed red cell volume are used to calculate the red blood cell mass. Hematocrit is the measure of the volume percentage of the red blood cells; it is calculated as a product of mean cell volume and the number of red blood cells. The packed red blood cell volume is the measure of the red blood cell component of the blood.
