Concept Introduction:

Decarboxylation occurs when a carboxyl group is attached to the alpha carbon of another carbonyl group. The carboxylic group which is present at alpha carbon of carbonyl group, is removed in this reaction.

Generally, the temperature required for such type of reaction is 150160°C.

Curved arrows aid in determining the movement and flow of electrons in the reaction. The electrons that take part in the chemical reactions are shown by the curved arrows.
