To review:
Match each type of leukocyte with its correct definition.
The different leukocytes are as follows:
Basophils
B lymphocyte
Neutrophil
Monocyte
T lymphocyte
Eosinophil
The definitions are as follows:
a) Destroys bacteria; directly phagocytoses bacteria.
b) Responds to
c) Activates all parts of the immune response; directly kills cancer or virally infected cells.
d) Secretes inflammatory mediators.
e) Agranulocyte that matures into macrophage.
f) Agranulocyte that secretes antibodies.
Introduction:
Leukocytes or white blood cells are formed elements in the blood that are formed by the process of hematopoiesis in bone marrow. Hematopoietic stem cells differentiate to form myeloid cell line or lymphoid cell line that further differentiates to form different types of leukocytes. These leukocytes mediate immune responses of the body by either secreting chemicals or enzymes from the granules present in the cytoplasm by secreting antibodies or by the process of phagocytosis.
