To explain: Whether valinomycin acts as uncoupler or inhibitor of oxidative phosphorylation.
Introduction:
The addition of valinomycin to an actively respiring mitochondria result in various things. The production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is decreased and there is an increase in the consumption of O2 (oxygen). Heat is liberated and an increase in the
To explain: Experimental observation of valinomycin to transfer potassium ions.
Introduction:
The uncoupling agents are those chemical compounds which uncouple oxidative phosphorylation from electron transport chain. As a consequence of this, there occurs an increase in the consumption of oxygen; however, ATP production is decreased. The proton gradient is dissipated as heat. There is an increase in the concentration of proton outside the inner mitochondrial membrane. Valinomycin is an uncoupler.
