The respiratory membrane is also known as the alveolar-capillary membrane. It is the actual site where the gaseous exchange takes place.
The respiratory membrane is very thin to allow diffusion of oxygen from alveoli into the blood capillaries and of carbon dioxide from the blood capillaries into the alveoli.
