Interpretation:

This mass-defect is in form of energy and is responsible for binding the nucleons together.

Concept introduction:

It is observed that the mass of a nucleus is always less than the mass of constituent (free) nucleons. This difference in mass is called as mass defect and is denoted as Dm.
If  mn is mass of a neutron;

mp is mass of a proton

1 amu =1.660540×1027kg

mn = 1.6747 × 1027 kg  =1.00852amump = 1.6725 × 1027 kg=1.00720amu

M (Z, A) = mass of bounded nucleus
Then,

Δm = Z × mp + (A  Z)×mn  M (Z, A)

Atomic mass

  1. C50r=49.94605u
  2. Z64n=63.92915u

To determine:

To determine Mass defect in gram per mole and binding energy in MeV per nucleon and also determine which of the two nuclei is stable.
