Chapter 18.8, Problem 11P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structures of the cyclic acetal or ketal that are derived from each of the given compounds are to be written.

Concept introduction:

Aldehydes and ketones contain carbonyl functional group in their parent chain and are named by adding suffix al and one to the name of the parent alkane.

Acetal is type of organic compound with a general formula RHC(OR')2. The two alkoxy groups (OR') are bonded with terminal carbon atom and the R' group can be same or different.

Ketal is an organic compound with general formula R2C(OR')2. The two alkoxy groups (OR') are bonded with same carbon atom in between the chain. The R' and R groups can be same or different.

Explanation O Conjugated Pi Systems Deducing the reactants of a Diels-Alder reaction Can the molecule on the right-hand side of this organic reaction be made in good yield from no more than two reactants, in one step, by moderately heating the reactants? ? Δ If your answer is yes, then draw the reactant or reactants in the drawing area below. You can draw the reactants in any arrangement you like. • If your answer is no, check the box under the drawing area instead. Click and drag to start drawing a structure. X
