A collection of microscopic DNA spots that are attached to a solid surface is termed as the DNA microarray. It is also commonly referred to as biochip or DNA chip. It is used to genotype the multiple regions of a genome or to measure the expression levels of a large number of genes simultaneously. For the rapid analyses of the biodiversity as well as the functional potential of the natural communities, more general microarrays can be constructed.
